The small medical instrument handle grip pictured here is an aluminum tube threaded on both ends covered with a gently contoured silicone rubber. The silicone handle grip is used for a number of different medical instruments - any of which can be screwed into the threaded ends of the insert.
The bond between the silicone and the aluminum is tested on every part molded, and is strong enough to survive hundreds of autoclave cycles - the standard method for sterilizing medical instruments.
