One a part is tooled up, it makes sense to carry that part across an entire product family and across multiple generations of a product. When a larger size motor needs a stiffer mounting grommet, Custom Rubber Corp. can manufacture the same shape with a different colored rubber. This insures that the rubber grommet with the right stiffness is used in the right product.
The same is true for product families that are used in different envirnoments. Custom Rubber Corp. can manufacture the same custom rubber grommet out of different polymers - and the best way to insure these parts aren't mixed up during assembly is to use different colored rubber.
