High-Grade Nitrile Seal

Production for this part began when an experienced rubber molding company approached Custom Rubber Corp. with a proposal to outsource some of their higher-volume production. The company, now Custom Rubber Corp.'s customer, is an expert at manufacturing low volume, hand-constructed molded rubber products that have alternating layers of rubber and reinforcing material. As they customers began requesting other seals, and as the quantities requested reached into the tens of thousands, however, they began to have difficulty meeting the demand. (Continued below.)

The part geometry for this specific seal is delicate, but the delicacy did not present any substantial challenges. Formulating the rubber material, on the other hand, proved to be a very demanding process. In order to engineer the rubber, Custom Rubber Corp. took advantage of its close relationships with multiple mixing partners. Ultimately, three or four individual rubber formulations from two different mixers were submitted the final material was approved. Part of the challenges in engineering the rubber compound came from the rigorous specifications, which call for very high performance when the material is subjected to a number of different oil immersion tests and which also demand that the material has to be processable.

Both Custom Rubber Corp. and our customer were pleased with the material that resulted from this collaboration and we have begun satisfying the ultimate customer with consistent quality and rapid deliveries. The success of this endeavor helped the relationship to develop further and Custom Rubber Corp. is now working on designing and manufacturing a number of other high to medium volume seals for our customer.
