Geared Bumper with Locking Grommets
The manufacturer of an automated pill dispensing machine called on Custom
Rubber Corp. to assist in the design of a rubber gearing mechanism for one
of the dispensing doors. After meeting with the customer and getting an understanding
of the design issues, Custom Rubber suggested a different design that eliminated
four other components, reducing overall cost and easing the machine assembly.

The design features of note are the two little rubber legs
shown in the photo. These are actually oversized grommets with rubber legs
or pullers attached. To assemble, the rubber legs are pulled through small
holes—shown on the back of the insert—and an oversized grommet head
snaps into place on the bottom side of the metal, locking the rubber gear into
place. No glue, no fasteners required.
