Customized Color Coded Rubber to Metal Electrical Connector for 1,000 AMP Application

Custom Rubber Corp. aided a start-up company as they developed spark-proof complex electrical connectors for gas and oil drilling applications. Now, the full product line features eight color options that enable proper identification of AC/DC current and positive/negative/ground anywhere in the world. In addition, Custom Rubber Corp. has created numerous variants on a plug and receptacle in order to account for the varieties of panel types and connections. (Continued below.)

These colorful rubber-encapsulated electrical connectors are designed to be utilized in a diverse range of markets including, but not limited to, hazardous locations, military and civil aerospace, and industrial facilities. To guard against improper connections, Custom Rubber Corp. decided to produce a line of brilliant colors in addition to engineering the rubber material to be oil, alkaline and UV resistant as well as fire retarding.

While ensuring that the new design is fully compatible with the industry standards, Custom Rubber Corp. improved upon the design by including:

1. Innovative tool design that fully eliminated all parting lines across the mating cylindrical ends
2. Double-raised o-ring beads on both the male and the female connector units
3. Proprietary material that is self-lubricating. While the interference fit between the male and female connectors is tighter than the industry standard, the proprietary component that leaches out the surface permits the connector to be continuously lubricated, improving spark protection without increasing the difficulty in making the connection.

Our strategic partneships with rubber material providers enabled Custom Rubber Corp. to produce a working compound despite initial difficulties creating a self-lubricating compound that was processable in the mold. Once a successful product existed, the next step was recreating the improved physical properties in a spectrum of eight different colors ranging from vibrant yellow and orange to deep red and green.

Ultimately, our customer's design enhancements combimed with our experience in habitually producing nearly perfect parts has resulted in significant demand within the industry for these rubber-coated electrical connectors.
