Color-Coded Electrical Connector for 1,000 Amp Application
Custom Rubber Corp. assisted a start-up company in their endeavor to develop spark-proof
complex electrical connectors for both oil and gas drilling applications. The result is a full
product line that has numerous variants on plug and receptacle depending on the panel type and
connection required in addition to featuring eight colors for proper identification of AC/DC current
and positive/negative/ground anywhere in the world. (Continued below.)

The rubber-encapsulated electrical connectors are designed for a diverse range
of markets and can be utilized in almost any industry, including hazardous locations, industrial locations, and military and civil aerospace.
The material has been specially formulated to be oil, alkaline & UV resistant as well as flame retarding.
A variety of brillian colors helps ensure
against improper connections.
The new design is 100% compatible with the industry standards but features superior
design characteristics including:
- Double-raised o-ring beads on both the male and the female connectors
- An innovative tool design that completely eliminates all parting lines across
the mating cylindrical ends
- Self-lubricating proprietary material. The interference fit between
the male and female connectors is considerably tighter than the industry
standard. However, the proprietary component that leaches out the surface continuously
lubricates the connector, allowing for increased spark protection without additional
difficulty in making the connection.
Producing a self-lubricating compound that was processable in the mold initially proved
difficult, but our strategic partnerships with rubber material
suppliers ultimately produced a successful compound. The next step was to duplicate
the physical properties of the rubber in eight different colors, which cross the spectrum from vibrant yellow and
orange to deep green and red.
Ultimately, our skills in consistently producing
near-perfect parts in combination with our customer's design enhancements has yielded considerable demand within a variety of industries.
