Broadband Cover Over Power Lines (BPL) Unique Application
Custom Rubber Corp.'s relationship with a leading BPL provider and Smart Grid
innovator continues with BPL products functioning as the starting point for
Smart Grid data transmission and collection off power lines. (Continued below.)

(Ref. 105508/105518)
Custom Rubber Corp. and our customer jointly designed two
versions of a nodeone for installation with a hot stick, and one for installation
when the power is off. Custom Rubber Corp. and our customer jointly designed
these products that incorporate three primary components: 1) a heat-resistant
coaxial cable, 2) a ferrite core to create the magnetic field, and 3) a durable,
functional rubber cover that protects the ferrite cores, the connection between
the coaxial cable and the ferrite, and holds the whole unit in place, encapsulating
the high-voltage power line.
The rubber material used is specifically designed
and molded to have just the right amount of conductivity to ensure the proper
transmission of Advance Metering data from the power line to the Smart Grid
electronics on the other end of the cable.
As a result of this project, Custom Rubber Corp. has perfected the ability
to completely encapsulate the terminal end of a wire, inside a fully formed
and molded rubber part. The brown cable in the foreground of the picture shows
a thin black wire that gets wrapped around the ferrite core: Custom Rubber's
unique rubber mold holds this wire in place (around one of the ferrite cores)
during the molding process, creating a water-tight seal around the cable entry
point and ensuring a continuous loop.
