Silicone Rubber Handle for Medical Instrument
A manufacturer of high-end surgical instruments came to Custom Rubber Corp.
because they were not happy with their old supplier: the quality of the products being delivered was not up
to the company's standards, and delivery/responsiveness they were receiving was not acceptable. In making this transition, the company accelerated the shift from traditional glass-reinforced nylon handles
to a softer, sure-grip silicone. (Continued below.)

Custom Rubber Corp.'s experience in bonding metal to rubber and its years of rubber molding knowledge have resulted in a superior design for the handle. Various suggestions were made to improve the design of the handle in order to take full advantage of silicone rubber's flexibility/sealing
capability . The surface texture was chosen
to maximize the surgeon's grip without creating a risk of contamination by forming deep enough grooves that bacteria would be able to hide from cleaning and sterilization.
To keep rubber out of the threaded holes, the part is designed with two separate cores, one on each end of a cylindrical aluminum
insert. The spherical handle
has a flat spot to ensure the surgeon can orient various tools correctly after
they are screwed into the handle since one handle can take any number of different
tools. The other threaded opening in the spherical handle is designed for the "strike
plate," which is utilized when more force is needed.
