Molded U-Channel Outperforms Extrusion
After years of struggling with "spaghetti" boxes of extruded rubber
u-channels, this military and government contractor turned to Custom Rubber
Corp. to find a better solution to cover the rough edges of the Kevlar helmets.
These helmets come in three different sizes and are contoured to protect the
back of the head and neck while allowing for full visibility. (Continued
below.)

The work of taking a straight-line extrusion and trying
to make it conform to the ups and downs of the helmet edge took more than 15
minutes per helmet. Custom Rubber Corp. designed and built a mold to make the
first, highest volume, sized helmet edgingand preliminary trials suggest
assembly time could be cut to less than 5 minutes.
Another part of the challenge was finding a material that met a somewhat outdated
government specification, was cost effective, matched the Pantone green requirement,
and was able to accept and hold the different colored paints applied to the
helmet; black, green, tan, blue, etc. After a few attempts, Custom Rubber,
together with our material supplying partners, was able to submit a material
that was approved.
