Helmet Edging
Looking for a better solution to cover the rough edges of their Kevlar helmets, a military and government contractor contacted Custom Rubber
Corp for help in designing a new rubber part that could replace the unweildy rubber u-channels that had been using. The first challenge of this project was dealing with the unique nature of Kevlar helmets: they are molded to protect the
back of the head and neck, without restricting visibility, and are available in three different sizes. (Continued
below.)

Prior to the customer contacting Custom Rubber Corp., the labor involved in forcing a straight-line extrusion to fit the varied edges of the helmet had taken over 15
minutes per helmet. Custom Rubber Corp. designed and built the first sized helmet edging mold that was also capable of producing in high volumes. Preliminary tests of the mold suggest
that assembly time could be cut to less than 5 minutes when using this design.
The material itself factored into the challenge as well since it had to fulfill the following conditions: meet a somewhat outdated
government specification, be cost effective, match the Pantone green requirement,
and accept and hold the different colored paints applied to the
helmet, including black, green, tan, and blue. By jointly working with our material suppliers, Custom Rubber Corp. was able to engineer and submit a material
that was approved.
