Building in America: Molded Rubber Parts

I came across this study recently and thought it had some interesting points. At Custom Rubber Corp., we’ve seen a number of companies come to us for domestic production of their rubber parts – after trying to source the molded rubber overseas for some time. We’ve found that we’re generally competitive once our customer adds in all the quality costs, inventory carrying costs, etc., that are mentioned in the study. I’ve highlighted and summarized the key points below.

The U.S. is becoming more attractive as a place to manufacture many goods consumed on this continent, according to “Made in America, Again,” from The Boston Consulting Group, August 2011 (http://www.bcg.com/documents/file84471.pdf).

America’s “increasingly flexible workforce and a resilient corporate sector” are contributing factors. In the last decade, China was the clear choice for manufacturing, with its supply of low cost labor, a developing domestic market, low currency and government incentives.

Sometime around 2015, the report states, manufacturing in some parts of the U.S. will be “just as economical as manufacturing in China,” due to wage and benefit increases at the average Chinese factory, and the costs of transportation, duties, supply chain risks and industrial real estate.

From the 1950s-80s, the U.S. experienced a dramatic loss of market share in areas such as color TVs, steel, cars and computer chips. “But U.S. industry and the economy responded with surprising flexibility and speed to reemerge more competitive and productive than ever.”

Within five years, the report continues, the total cost of production for many products will be only about 10 to 15 percent less in Chinese coastal cities than in some parts of the U.S. where factories are likely to be built. The “cost gap” between sourcing in China and manufacturing in the U.S. will be “minimal.”

What are the components of China’s changing cost equation? The rising cost of labor, electricity, and industrial land. “To secure low real-estate costs in China, companies will need to move inland,” and in doing so incur higher transportation costs. Transpacific shipping rates are on the rise, too.

In addition, there are “headache” costs of inventory expenses, quality control problems, unanticipated travel needs and the threat of natural disasters.

China, the report states, should no longer be treated as “the default option.” The Boston Group’s advice to U.S. companies: “undertake a fresh, rigorous, product-by-product analysis of their … networks; [and] make sure that their supply chains are flexible, dynamic, and globally balanced.”

Custom Rubber Corp. stands ready not only to assist our prospects and customers with the domestic production of their molded rubber component needs, but also to help with product design, to insure the most cost effective and elegant solution to the issue at hand. Custom Rubber Replicates Hunt Wilde Rubber Handle Grip Styles

Roughly one year ago, Custom Rubber began receiving calls from customers looking for rubber handle grips.  Many of these potential customers were searching for any alternative they could find because Hunt Wilde ceased production.

Custom Rubber Corp. has helped a few of these customers by re-creating the necessary tooling – at Custom Rubber Corp.’s expense – and supplying high-quality rubber handle grips in whatever color is required.

The number of these inquiries has remained steady and consistent, and today, Custom Rubber Corp. is announcing a new program for former Hunt Wilde customers.  Custom Rubber Corp. has allocated a capital budget specifically to build new tooling to replicate the Hunt Wilde rubber handle grip styles that are the most popular.

If customers are interested in logos or any custom engraving, it may be possible to incorporate those features into any rubber handle grip for an extra, one-time charge.  The rubber handle grips will be available in any color desired, and all rubber handle grips will be manufactured out of a high-quality EPDM rubber, similar to what Custom Rubber Corp. uses for it’s current rubber handle grips.

Contact Custom Rubber Corp. today to see if your former Hunt Wilde rubber handle grip is one of the handle grips Custom Rubber Corp. will be tooling up.

CPR system

For the best results in prototyping, Custom Rubber Corp. believes a steel tool that is close to the finished product is best.  Turn-around times for this option depend on the complexity of the part, but generally are no more than two weeks.  If your part fits within a 7″x7″ square, Custom Rubber Corp. can develop steel prototype tooling to rapidly prototype your part with our C.P.R. system (Custom Rubber Corp. Prototype Response).

Alternatively, Custom Rubber Corp. can provide rapid prototypes from two processes.  Both processes require a three-dimensional model which Custom Rubber Corp. can provide for customers:

1.  Cast urethane parts from silicone molds.

This requires the creation of a hard plastic SLA prototype.  The SLA prototype is then used to make a silicone rubber mold.  The last step is to cast liquid urethane into the silicone rubber mold.  The result is a urethane rubber part that has similar hardness, tensile strength, and elongation to the rubber used in production.

2.  Special SLA-like prototyping using unique materials.

The most-often recommended material is a low durometer rubber-like material that has limited elongation and tear strength but can give a customer an accurate touch and feel prior to cutting steel.  These are sometimes used for trade shows and initial assemblies.

A Look Back at Custom Rubber Corp.

After watching Mad Men over the weekend, I was inspired to post some of the old promotional artwork from Custom Rubber Corp.’s early days (When it was still called the Custom Rubber Company, and located on Payne Ave.)

Although it’s been over 35 years since these Ads and marketing materials were made, Custom Rubber Corp. continues to use its experience, quality manufacturing, and service to offer Responsiveness ~ from Design to Delivery.

Brief History Lesson:
Custom Rubber Corp. was founded in 1956 and has been under the current ownership since 1980 (we’re no longer a subsidiary of Hancock-Gross).

Custom Rubber Corp. has been at it’s current location (1274 E. 55th Street, Cleveland, OH 44103) since 1986, and with an addition to the building in 1997, is now 66,000 square feet.

Applications and Limitations of Rubber Parts

Ever since Charles Goodyear patented the rubber vulcanization process in 1844, countless applications for rubber products have been discovered. Whether it’s a rubber gasket used to seal against water, a rubber cover used to protect an electronic device, or simply a silicone glove used to take cookie sheets out of the oven, the applications of rubber products have stretched (pun intended) to span every industry from medical, to automotive, to consumer goods.

At Custom Rubber Corp. we understand this versatility as we have manufactured thousands of rubber parts for several industries and applications. Occasionally we receive requests where manufacturing a rubber part isn’t a feasible solution for the customer’s problem.

Recently a customer called with an interesting request. He wanted a clear, 1/4” thick, silicone rubber cover manufactured to fit over a hollow glass ball. As with all requests, whether high volume or low volume, it’s important to speak with the customer and discuss the part’s environment, and what problem they’re hoping to solve. The more we know about the rubber part’s intended use, the more insight we’re able to provide regarding the design, material selection, and manufacture of the part.

After speaking with the customer, we determined that this project was not feasible for several reasons:

  1. Their objective for the silicone rubber cover was to allow the glass ball to bounce so they can use it to play basketball. A 1/4” thick cover would not be able to sufficiently deflect the impact of bouncing the glass ball, and the glass ball would likely shatter.
  2. Furthermore, a basketball’s bounce is more directly related to it’s configuration than the material. A basketball is filled with compressed air, so when it’s bounced against a surface it momentarily flattens somewhat, and its rebound back to its normal shape allows it to bounce. Adding a silicone rubber cover to a glass ball would not allow the glass to flatten and rebound.
  3. The caller only needed one cover manufactured for recreational use. While this would be an entertaining way to play basketball and get through the NBA lockout, the tooling costs to build a steel mold, along with the production and setup costs to manufacture the silicone aren’t conducive to manufacturing a single part for personal recreational use.

The Cost of Outsourcing Offshore

Here is a good article that discusses how faulty assumptions about outsourcing manufacturing often have negative consequences.  In a competitive global market, most companies/businesses do not fully understand the “total cost of ownership” because they fail to account for travel expenses, design changes and other “hidden costs.”  Near the end is a list of benefits for sourcing domestically, which include flexible delivery times and rapid turnaround for prototypes/tooling.

At Custom Rubber Corp. we are proud of the fact that all our rubber products are made in the U.S.A.  Over the past 20 years, we have consistently proven our ability to meet any product specification by achieving a 98% customer retention rate.  As our motto suggests, we value responsiveness above all else.  We’re committed to returning calls within 24 hours and providing quotes in 3 days.  Rush turnaround is a core competency.

Molding Rubber Parts in Color

Custom Rubber Corp. molds rubber parts in a variety of colors. Sometimes this is done for simple aesthetic reasons, other times the color is critical to the use of the part. Colored rubber compounds can be used to differentiate durometer, distinguish similar components from each other, highlight safety features, and ensure non-marking contact.

Different colored handles can be an effective way to quickly identify different socket sizes of medical screwdrivers during surgery. It’s difficult to tell the difference between a 1.5mm socket size and 2.5mm socket size just by looking at them. If a doctor says “Hand me the screwdriver with an orange handle”, that’s easier to identify.

Additionally, with the right design, rubber handle grips are a great way to limit torque and prevent a screwdriver from being tightened too much during medical procedures.
